About us
OUR STORY
In our clinic we combine the knowledge and experience of a local midwife, Leodigard, and the leadership and knowledge of an European medical doctor, Nathasja. Leodigard is responsible for the daily management, as director and midwife in charge. Nathasja is director and medical doctor in charge, but will also supervise the accountant, secretary and data clerk.
THE MATERNITY TRIAD
To address the multiple causes of the high maternal and perinatal death rate in Tanzania, we developed our special formula: the maternity triad. This triad consists of three factors which together create the perfect combination of features to reduce maternal and perinatal death.
SPECIALIZED MATERNITY CARE
Respectful, high quality maternity care without any distractions or disturbances. In contrast to the ‘regular’ health care facilities in this region, we aim to provide private, modern specialized maternity care for each and every single patient. Which eventually will lead to a reduction in maternal and perinatal death.
REACHABILITY
Our clinic is located at the main road from Mwanza to Bukoba, in between many densely populated villages. Public transport fees to reach the clinic are low. This location convinces women and their families to visit our clinic instead of staying at home. At 5 kilometers from LEONA clinic, you find St. Joseph Hospital in Kagondo, which provides a safe alternative in case a delivery is not progressing well or in case a Caesarean section is necessary.
EDUCATION
At our Reproductive Child Health Care department (RCH) our skilled staff gives proper education on pregnancy, delivery, child healthcare, family planning and cervical cancer screening. Ultrasound service is available 24/7 to detect abnormal or high risk pregnancies, to prevent unsafe deliveries. We organize events at our clinic, but also in the villages and at schools, where young and/or future parents and teenagers can learn about the benefits of giving birth at a health facility, family planning, vaccination, et cetera.
